As some of you know, when it comes to cocktails, I’m a gin girl. Sure, I enjoy a good margarita, mojito, red wine, champagne or beer … but when I scan a cocktail list, I’m usually looking for the gin option. This Hibiscus Gin and Tonic is currently one of my favorite cocktail recipes ever.
This recipe was inspired by a similar drink at The Fifth, a restaurant in Dallas/Fort Worth that I reviewed for my Dinner and a Show restaurant column at TheaterJones.com. The combo of the sweet (but not too sweet) hibiscus, tartness of the citrus juice, gin and carbonation had me smitten. I had to order a second one. And it tasted exactly the same (I wish that happened at all bars/restaurants).
But when I returned to the restaurant for the second time, they were out of the hibiscus syrup. I was craving a hibiscus gin and tonic so much that I had to recreate it at home soon after.
I did a lot of online research to find the right hibiscus syrup. I wanted one made with real hibiscus. It turns out that isn’t so easy to find! However, I finally found one that fit the bill – the Wild Hibiscus Flowers in Syrup pictured below. You can click the link to find it on Amazon (I haven’t been able to find it in a store yet). It’s made with wild hibiscus flowers (38%), sugar and water (you’ll use both the flowers and the syrup).
Note: I’m an Amazon affiliate; if you click the link and purchase the hibiscus syrup, your price is the same, and I make a tiny commission (which helps keep this blog going). No pressure. Just required to tell ya!
