What’s better than heading down to the Texas Hill Country for a delicious, memorable wine tasting experience? Enjoying that experience from the comfort and safety of your own patio! Recently, I participated in a Kuhlman Cellars Virtual Wine Tasting Experience: Sense of Taste 2020.
It was a live, interactive wine tasting webinar that included a Kuhlman Cellars bundle of four unique wines:
- 2018 Calcaria
- 2018 Viognier
- 2017 Marl
- 2016 KanKar
When you purchase the bundle, Kuhlman ships all 4 bottles to your home, and shipping is free! Then, on the designated date and time, you click the private Zoom link and join others plus a Kuhlman Cellars sommelier for a fun and unique experience.
Brandi, the sommelier at Kuhlman Cellars, led us all through an eye-opening experience (or should I say, a taste-bud-opening one!?) to explore our own individual tastes, to determine which flavors work for each of us with each wine.
My daughter, who was quarantining at home with me as she finished her final semester of college online, joined me for our virtual party on the patio. We tasted each wine with five elements: salty, sour, sweet, fatty and spicy. It was really interesting to see and hear different people’s preferences. My daughter and I had some similar favorite pairings, but also some very different ones. For example, I wasn’t a fan of any of the wines paired with something sour (the lemons pictured above), but she loved the Marl with sour. On the other hand, she wasn’t a big fan of salt with most of them, but I enjoyed salt with all of them to varying degrees. We kept track of our reactions on a chart Kuhlman supplied before the tasting began. Now we have our own personal wine pairing roadmap!
I wasn’t sure what to expect of my first virtual wine tasting, but it ended up being one of my favorite wine tasting experiences ever! Maybe my enthusiasm was influenced by being in quarantine for 2 months straight, thanks to COVID-19, but Brandi at Kuhlman was so down-to-earth and truly helpful that I’d jump at the chance to participate in another one of Kuhlman’s virtual wine tastings!
We particularly enjoyed the Calcaria white and loved it paired with sugar (sweet) and some spicy homemade crackers.
Our favorite of all was the Kankar, which wasn’t a huge surprise to us: we both prefer red wine.
So many wine tastings talk only about the wine or get tied up in what’s right or wrong. But our biology is different, Mandi pointed out. It’s more important (and fun) to learn what we each prefer to pair with different wines.
If you love wine and/or need something fun to do at home, we HIGHLY recommend a Kuhlman Cellars Virtual Wine Tasting. Visit their website to check out all the fun, virtual wine tasting options.
Cheers!
