The only thing better than good food and wine shared among friends is adding both laughter and amazement to the mix. Where can you find that combo? At the “Wine and Magic” show at Checkered Past Winery in Dallas! So when I was recently invited back, I jumped at the chance. Check out why and what new food and wines we tried in my latest review below: Food, Wine and Magic: Checkered Past Winery and Trigg Watson.
But First, The Wines!
This trip, I wanted focused on trying the Checkered Past Winery Texas reds, so we ordered a flight to sample the Dolcetto, the RedRed Wine, the Sangiovese and the Tempranillo.
Toward the end of my last visit, I tried a small sample of the Sangiovese and LOVED it. This time was no different. Hands-down, it was my favorite … and I ended up buying two bottles of the Sangiovese to take home. Note: if you’re part of their wine club, you can get a 10% discount on all bottles that you drink on-site and a 20% discount on bottles you take home!
We both love red wines, but we have different palettes. Of the four wines we enjoyed, we both loved the Sangiovese the most. My second favorites were the Tempranillo and the Dolcetto. His second favorite was the RedRed Wine.
Salad, Charcuterie, Flatbread Pizza and More
During my original visit (which you can read about here), we tried several food options. This time, we purposefully tried different menu items … although I had to hit repeat on one of my favorites: the Goat Cheese Stuffed Pappadew Skewers! They’re simply amazing.
We also ordered the Baby Arugula Salad, which is large enough for two people to share and is made with baby arugula, tomatoes, apples, blue cheese and candied pecans with a cranberry vinaigrette. I would SO order this again (although with the blue cheese on the side next time, so I don’t have to pick around it, thanks to my stupid cow’s milk allergy).
Next, we tried the Charcuterie Board, which included: prosciutto di parma, duck salami, hot capiola, pork salami, pickles, walnuts, seasoned toasted focaccia and olive tapenade. If we were going to fight over anything on this board, it would have been the duck salami! But we minded our manners and shared nicely …
After all that meat, we ordered the veggie pizza (which is loaded with fresh vegetables!) and also tried the herbed goat cheese spread with flat bread wedges.
By this time, it was getting dark outside and close to showtime!
Magic and Laughter with Trigg Watson!
I couldn’t wait to see Trigg Watson’s magic show again. Not only is his show amazing, but it’s hilarious too!
And this time, I thought I’d be able to figure out how he accomplished his feats. Spoiler alert: I still couldn’t!
What I COULD figure out was how they made more wine + dessert appear during the show. Spoiler alert: a very attentive wait staff discreetly refills wine and water glasses plus takes food orders during the show.
Trigg performs periodically throughout the year at Checkered Past Winery. Stay tuned for announcements about future show dates.
In the meantime, Checkered Past has a special New Year’s Eve event on the calendar, live jazz on Thursday nights and more specials and events throughout each month. Check out their calendar.
